On Thurday, December 3rd, three of us Jersey City Free Teens club members had a great experience telling students at PS#37 (Elementary- Middle) School in downtown Jersey City about Free Teens. It was Report Card Night for Parents, so it was possible for Tay, Aliyah and me to talk with many of them there.
Tay, the People’s Choice Award Recipent of Jersey City BergenView Club was pumped up and energized, so was Aliyah! Kids were very excited to see us.

As we were walking in the hallways, talking to parents, some kids stopped us to say they knew Free Teens from classroom presentations they’d seen. We spoke to kids and parents about the importance of abstinence not only from sex but also drugs, alcohol and more.

We emphasized that Free Teens USA is a GREAT, free program to join. From Dancing to Singing to Acting to the annual Teen Media Summit, it's a lifetime experience and something you would want to be a part of.

The Bergen View Friday Club of Jersey City received its first PS37 recruit the next day, and he was very happy to be there! He even stated “Free Teens club meetings should be on Saturday and Sunday, too!” He loved the club meeting!

Statements from Clair Memorial Free Teens Members

I choose to be a Free Teens because I didn’t want to be another statistic or an uneducated young black man with a baby and no job. Free Teens has taught me that waiting is the best thing because when I find my love of my life I want to be clean and able to support our family. Free Teens is also teaching me that my education will be my future. I want to change the statistics that blacks can’t finish school and get their college degree. In my mind failure is not an option and Free Teens is pushing that theory by trying to tell us to wait for sex until marriage. When you first have sex it probably be on your mind everyday. Tyler Perry once said in his show Madea Goes To Jail  “Some people are like leaves on a tree, some are seasonal, some are lifetime leaves.  We have to be able to pick who is who. A person who comes around sometimes or a person there for you forever.”  Kenneth Pinnock, III

Abstinence brings friends like love and commitment, but make the mistake of having sex and that brings unwanted friends like AIDS and STD’s.  You may think you’re cool but you’re acting like a fool doing this doing that having sex with the next but come on man who you fooling you know deep down inside you’re hurting so come on Abstinence is the best way to live your life.  Kennisha Kelly

More kids need to know about abstinence, because young teenagers out there are getting pregnant early and not waiting until they get married. Pregnant teens are dealing with a lot of drama and pain. Aishianay Bratten

I think you should wait to have sex if you are not married. There could be a lot of consequences like pregnancy and HIV. It is scary! I learned the few are very lucky and you do not have to live with someone before you really know him well.  I think having sex is addictive like a cigarette, if you keep on doing it, you will get used to it. I think that you should wait until marriage to have sex or make love. I learned that some teenagers think having sex is love. And living with your boyfriend is not the way. I will not let my boyfriend control me. I will surely not have sex before marriage. Fanny Sesay
